What do Little Learners  aim to achieve?

One of our main aims is to provide a positive learning environment which enables your child to experience success without fear of failure.  As your child develops greater self-confidence they learn to make choices and develop and use their own ideas and strategies to deal with problems they meet.  They therefore become independent learners.  These vital skills are able to be transferred and utilised at your child’s mainstream school and in life generally.  This helps them to achieve to their full potential.

How does the tuition group work?

When your child starts at Little Learners they will be informally assessed by their class teacher.  Reports from school, previous learning experiences and also any parental concerns will be taken into account.  From this information a programme of work will be planned, in accordance with National Curriculum guidelines.  Your child will be encouraged to work independently, at a pace suited to them, using a range of textbooks and activities chosen to meet these targets.  Some activities will aim to reinforce previous learning; others will provide unfamiliar problems which may require applying previously learned strategies or learning new skills.

What is the teacher’s role?

We aim to help your child make the transition from being a dependent learner to one who is able to work with independence and self-motivation.  We therefore help your child to focus and follow instructions.  Your child’s teacher will model strategies and demonstrate good practice; they will interact sensitively and provide encouragement.  We aim to work in support of your child’s mainstream school and therefore readily adapt work to meet areas of need or weakness.  We will report back to you the progress your child is making.

What do you cover during the literacy session?
This session lasts for 45 minutes.  During this time your child will work through a range of literacy skills at word, sentence and text level.   An example of some of the things that may be covered, dependent on your child’s age and need, include; phonics, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, comprehension and composition.

What do you cover during the numeracy session?

Some of the skills addressed include; number and the number system, calculations, solving problems, handling data, using measures, shape and space.  We encourage the use of mental as well as written methods.

Who will be teaching my child?

Little Learners staff are all fully qualified, experienced primary school teachers, registered with the General Teaching Council (GTC).  All staff have been police checked.

Can you help prepare my child for examinations?

Yes!  By teaching the skills needed and working on areas of weakness examinations become easier and less stressful.  We are able to work through past SAT papers and have 11+ papers available for your child to use. We are now also able to offer tuition up to GCSE.

Is my child suited to Little Learners?

Is your child ready and willing to learn?
Does your child need a boost or need pushing to stay ahead?
Is your child well-behaved?
Has your child demonstrated difficulties at school?
Yes!

Will my child receive homework?
Homework will be provided each week unless you feel it is not right for your child, for example if they already have enough homework from their mainstream school.  Homework is intended to reinforce previous learning experiences or is used to assess your child’s future needs.  It is also an ideal opportunity for you to monitor your child’s progress whilst offering encouragement and where necessary guidance.   A maximum of two pieces of homework will be provided each week of attendance.  The homework will be collected in and marked each week; any problems will be addressed during the relevant session.
